Your Divine Calling

Walking Points Podcast: Colossians 1:1-2

Scripture Reading: Colossians 1:1-2 (ESV)

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, To the saints and faithful brothers in Christ at Colossae: Grace to you and peace from God our Father.

Summary Exposition

In these opening verses of Colossians, the Apostle Paul provides us with a rich introduction of theological truth, woven together with the three powerful strands of our divine calling, communal identity, and divine blessing.

Paul begins by identifying himself as an apostle - a title that signifies one sent with divine authority. His apostleship is “by the will of God,” underscoring that his role is not self-appointed but divinely ordained. As C.S. Lewis once wrote, “The Christian way is different: harder, and easier. Christ says, ‘Give me All. I don't want so much of your time and so much of your money and so much of your work: now give me All.’”

Consider the profound implications of divine calling. Just as Jonah discovered, God’s call is inescapable and always lovingly persistent. Every pastor, every believer has a unique “call story” that reflects God’s sovereign guidance. As Oswald Chambers reminds us, “God does not give us overcoming life: He gives us life as we overcome.”

Paul addresses the Colossian believers as “saints and faithful brothers in Christ,” highlighting their dual identity. They aren’t just individuals but a community - sanctified and committed to faith. This resonates with the communal nature of Christian discipleship. We aren’t lone rangers but part of a spiritual family, called to support, challenge, and encourage one another.

The apostle’s blessing of “grace to you and peace from God our Father” is no mere pleasantry. Grace represents God’s unmerited favor and power, transforming lives with its radical generosity. Peace - shalom - signifies not just tranquility, but wholeness, restoration, and divine order.
