The Light That Dispels the Darkness
Evening Peace: A Quiet Time of Prayer and Reflection Before Sleep
Tonight’s Verses
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
John 1:1-5
Reflection
As the day ends and the shadows of evening stretch across the sky, we’re reminded of the constant interplay of light and darkness - not only in nature but also in our hearts and minds. John’s Gospel opens with a glorious declaration: the Word, Jesus Christ, is the eternal source of light and life. No matter how dark our circumstances may feel, his light shines undiminished, and the darkness cannot overcome it.
The darkness of our world can often feel overwhelming - loneliness, anxiety, and fear seem to grow as the night deepens. Yet, Christ’s presence is a steadfast assurance that we’re never truly alone. His light penetrates even the deepest darkness, filling our hearts with peace and dispelling fear. Just as the Psalmist declared, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105), so Jesus illuminates our steps, even in the night.
Tonight, as you prepare for rest, meditate on the truth that the light of Christ is eternal and unchanging. Let his life-giving presence calm your heart and drive away your fears. Trust that the same Word who brought creation into existence is holding you securely, surrounding you with his unassailable light.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, you are the eternal Word, the light that shines in the darkness and the life that sustains me. Thank you for being my constant source of peace and hope, even when the world feels uncertain. As I lay down to rest, I ask that you fill my heart with your light, dispelling every shadow of fear, worry, and doubt. Protect me through the night, and grant me a deep, restorative sleep. Help me to wake refreshed and ready to walk in the light of your presence once again. In your precious name, I pray. Amen.
Hymn Verse
“Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know
His voice who ruled them while he dwelt below.”
(*Be Still, My Soul*, Katharina von Schlegel, 1752)
