The Grace That Dwells Among Us
Evening Peace: A Quiet Time of Prayer and Reflection Before Sleep
Tonight’s Verse
The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 1:9-14
Reflection
As we draw the day to a close, these words from John’s Gospel remind us of an extraordinary truth: the eternal Word, Jesus Christ, came to dwell among us. The One through whom all things were made entered our broken world, bringing light and grace to all who would receive him. Even when the world failed to recognize him, his light continued to shine, offering hope and redemption to those who believe in his name.
The imagery of Christ as the true light reminds us that he is not just a distant God but one who walks beside us. He dwelt among us, full of grace and truth, to show us the Father’s glory and extend his unearned favor to us. No matter how we may have stumbled today or how unworthy we may feel tonight, the grace of Christ welcomes us into the family of God. His light reaches every corner of our hearts, filling us with peace that transcends our understanding.
As you prepare to rest tonight, take comfort in the reality that you are a beloved child of God. The Word who became flesh is not far away - he is near, full of grace and truth, ready to sustain you through every trial and grant you the peace that only he can provide. Rest in the assurance that his glory surrounds you and his love abides with you.
Prayer
Gracious Lord, thank you for coming to dwell among us, for revealing the Father’s glory, and for offering us the gift of your grace. Tonight, I rest in the truth that I am your child, not by my works, but through your love and mercy. Fill my heart with your light, and let the peace of your presence calm my fears and anxieties. Watch over me as I sleep and renew my spirit for the day ahead. Thank you for being my constant source of hope and truth. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
Hymn Verse
“Amazing grace! How sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.”
(Amazing Grace, John Newton, 1779)
