Welcome to Evening Peace, a quiet moment of reflection before sleep. As the day draws to a close, we set aside the noise of the world and turn our hearts toward God’s presence. Tonight, we meditate on the sustaining grace of Christ - the One who strengthens us in every trial and leads us forward in hope. Whether today has been filled with joy or struggle, let’s take comfort in the promise that his power is at work within us. May this time of devotion bring you peace and renewal as you rest in his love.
Tonight’s Verse
“Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church, of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints. To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.” Colossians 1:24-29
Reflection
As we end the day, Paul’s words in Colossians call us to consider the deeper purpose of our trials. He speaks of rejoicing in suffering, not because pain is good in itself, but because it’s being used for a greater purpose - the strengthening of the church and the revealing of Christ’s glory. This is a profound truth: even in difficulty, God’s at work, refining us, drawing us nearer, and using our lives for his kingdom.
What’s this mystery that Paul speaks of, hidden for ages but now revealed? It’s this: “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” This is not just an abstract theological concept – it’s the living reality that sustains us. Christ dwells in us by his Spirit, empowering us, guiding us, and filling us with the certainty that we’re never alone. As John Calvin once wrote, “Christ is not outside of us but dwells within us, so that we become partakers not only of his benefits but of himself.” His presence in us gives meaning to our struggles and endurance for the journey.
Perhaps today has been wearying. You may have felt the weight of burdens, the sting of disappointments, or the exhaustion of laboring for things unseen. But take heart - Paul reminds us that we do not toil in our own strength. We struggle, yes, but it’s his energy that works powerfully within us. The work he’s begun in you, he will surely bring to completion (Philippians 1:6).
When we rest in Christ’s strength, we find that our burdens aren’t ours to carry alone. Even as we sleep, his power sustains us. Just as a shepherd watches over his flock in the night, so our Good Shepherd never slumbers nor sleeps (Psalm 121:4). He’s always working, always leading, always providing for his own.
Tonight, as you prepare for sleep, release the weight of the day into his hands. You don’t have to figure everything out or muster your own strength. Christ is in you, and his power is sufficient. Let this truth settle deep in your heart, bringing the peace that surpasses all understanding.
Rest in him, knowing that he is your hope, your strength, and your ever-present help.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I thank you that Christ is in me, the hope of glory. In every season of life, you’re working, shaping me into the image of your Son. When I grow weary, remind me that I do not labor in my own strength, but in the power you so graciously provide. I surrender my struggles, my doubts, and my burdens to you, trusting that you’re always faithful.
As I lay down to rest, quiet my soul with the assurance of your presence. Fill my heart with peace, and guard me through the night. Strengthen me for the day ahead, that I may walk in faith and trust in your perfect plan. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
Hymn Verse
“Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side;
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In every change, He faithful will remain.”
(Be Still, My Soul, Katharina von Schlegel, 1752)
