Soar we now where Christ has led, following our exalted Head; made like him, like him we rise; ours the cross, the grave, the skies!
Call to Worship
Leader: He was despised and rejected, wounded and bruised.
People: And bore our grief and our sorrow; He was afflicted and punished.
Leader: But by his suffering we are made righteous, and by his broken body we are made whole.
People: May God’s Suffering Servant be exalted; may God be worshiped and praised.
Hymn: “Nothing but the Blood” No. 362
Prayer
God of mercy, it is sad but true that we tend to ignore the painful and sorrowful image of the cross, and to base our faith instead on more positive and sunny ideas of our own. Forgive us for our arrogance in trying to devise a more satisfactory salvation than yours; and our short-sightedness in failing to see the gain beyond the pain of the cross. Give us the wisdom to see your presence in Christ’s God-forsakenness, so that we may sense it as well in our own. In his name we pray. Amen.
