🕰️ A Sunday of Stirring Reflections 🙏
My dear friends and cherished family,
(I wrote the following a couple of weeks ago and am just now getting
around to sharing it with you. Forgive my tardiness.)
As the warm glow of the afternoon sun filters through the curtains of my study, I find myself awash in a sea of contemplation. This morning’s events at our beloved church have stirred within me a whirlpool of thoughts, each demanding attention like a class of eager students on the first day of term.
🎭 The Stage is Set: Worship and Missions 🌎
Today, I had the distinct privilege of assisting in leading our worship service. It’s a task I approach with both trepidation and joy, much like a novice gardener tending to a prized orchid. The responsibility weighs heavy, yet the honor lifts the spirit.
We were graced with the presence of our recently returned mission team from Guatemala. Their tales of God’s work in that vibrant land painted a vivid picture of faith in action. It reminded me of the words of the great English author, G.K. Chesterton, who once quipped, “The traveler sees what he sees. The tourist sees what he has come to see.” Our missionaries, it seems, saw the very hand of God at work.
📖 The Sermon that Shook: Revelation’s Wake-Up Call ⏰
However, it was our good pastor’s sermon that truly set my mind awhirl. He spoke on Revelation 3:1-6, addressing the church of Sardis - the “dead church.” The gravity of those words hit me like a sudden chill on a summer’s day.
“Do I have the external appearance of a Christian but inside am spiritually dead?”
This question, my friends, is not unlike asking if one’s pocket watch is merely for show or if it truly keeps time. It’s a query that should give us all pause.
🎭 Life’s Solo Performance: Beyond the Lip-Sync 🎤
I’m reminded of a conversation I once had with my dear friend and mentor, the late Dr. Beaumont, outside Palmetto Cove’s quaint Magnolia Café. “Augustus,” he said, fixing me with those piercing blue eyes of his, “we can lip-sync through the concert of life, but one day we will have to give a solo performance.”
Now, as one who considers carrying a tune to be a Herculean task, the thought of a solo performance sends shivers down my spine. But Dr. Beaumont wasn’t talking about music, was he? He was speaking of that inevitable moment when we stand before our Creator, stripped of all pretense and façade.
🌅 The Dawn of True Faith: Seeing Everything Else 👀
As the great C.S. Lewis once wrote, “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” Our faith, when genuine, illuminates every aspect of our lives.
🏊♂️ Swimming in God’s Grace: The Holy Spirit as Our Lifeguard
Moreover, we are not left to our own devices in this grand endeavor. By his Holy Spirit, we are empowered to live the life to which we are called. Our Heavenly Father has not merely thrown us into the deep end of life’s pool and commanded us to swim. No, he has provided us with the ultimate lifeguard and swimming instructor in the person of the Holy Spirit.
🗺️ Navigating the Waters: A Spiritual Action Plan 🧭
So, what are we to do with these weighty thoughts? Allow me to suggest a few practical steps:
1. Regular Self-Examination: Just as we might check our pocket watch against the town clock, let us regularly examine our hearts against the standard of God’s Word.
2. Cultivate Authenticity: In a world of carefully curated social media profiles, let us strive to be genuine in our faith and relationships.
3. Embrace Community: None of us is meant to walk this path alone. Let us engage deeply with our fellow believers, allowing them to speak truth into our lives.
4. Seek the Spirit’s Guidance: Through prayer and meditation on Scripture, let us attune our hearts to the whispers of the Holy Spirit.
5. Live with Eternity in View: Let us make decisions and live our lives with the awareness that one day we will give an account to our Lord.
🍮 The Proof is in the Pudding (and the Living) 🥄
As I conclude this entry, I’m reminded of a saying my grandmother was fond of: “The proof of the pudding is in the eating.” Similarly, the proof of our faith is in the living. Let us not be content with a faith that is merely for show, but rather strive for a vibrant, transformative relationship with our Lord.
Until our paths cross again, may your faith be as genuine as a Carolina summer day is long.
Yours in contemplation and faith,
Augustus B. Merriweather III
P.S. Remember, dear readers, life’s not a dress rehearsal - it’s opening night every day. By his grace, let’s make it a performance worthy of a standing ovation from the Almighty himself. 🎭👏
