Like a Tree by the Water
Evening Peace: A Quiet Time of Prayer and Reflection Before Sleep
Tonight’s Verse
But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
Psalm 1:2-3
Reflection
Psalm 1 presents us with two contrasting ways of life: the way of the righteous, who delight in God’s Word, and the way of the wicked, who reject him. The one who delights in the Lord is compared to a tree planted by streams of water - deeply rooted, flourishing, and bearing fruit in its season. This is the picture of a life nourished by the presence of God, sustained not by shifting circumstances but by the eternal, life-giving stream of his truth.
J.C. Ryle once wrote, “A Bible that is falling apart usually belongs to someone who isn’t.” The righteous are not those who merely read Scripture occasionally but those who meditate on it day and night, allowing it to shape their thoughts, desires, and actions. Just as a tree’s roots reach down into the soil for sustenance, our souls must be rooted in the Word of God. It’s this steady, faithful abiding in Christ that brings true peace and lasting fruitfulness.
Tonight, as you prepare for rest, consider where your roots are planted. Are you drinking from the living water of God’s Word, or are you relying on the fleeting streams of worldly wisdom? Trust in the Lord’s promises, knowing that a life anchored in him will never wither. As you close your eyes, let his truth refresh you like a stream that never runs dry, bringing you peace and strength for the day to come.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I desire to be like a tree planted by streams of water, deeply rooted in your truth. Help me to delight in your Word and meditate on it day and night. Keep me from walking in the counsel of the wicked, and strengthen me to stand firm in your ways. As I rest tonight, nourish my heart with your peace, and let me awake refreshed to live for your glory. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
Hymn Verse
“Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah,
Pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but Thou art mighty,
Hold me with Thy powerful hand.”
(Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah, William Williams, 1745)
