Introduction
This devotion was inspired by my Wednesday morning men’s study earlier this week. We were studying Colossians 1:15-23 and spent a great deal of time discussing (and being amazed by) Colossians 1:16-17. I thought I would share a little of what we discussed as well as what I’ve been thinking about since.
For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. (Colossians 1:16-17)
Have you ever gazed at the night sky, watched a sunrise, or held a newborn baby and wondered about the deeper meaning behind it all? These verses from Colossians provide some of the most profound and far-reaching answers to life’s biggest questions. Like John’s magnificent prologue – “In the beginning was the Word... all things were made through him” (John 1:1,3) - Paul reveals truths about Jesus Christ that stretch far beyond what many Christians typically consider in their daily lives.
Creator of All Things
Paul begins with a stunning declaration: everything that exists was created “by him” (Christ). The Greek preposition used here (en) suggests Christ wasn’t merely present at creation but was the active agent through whom all things came into being. Scientists tell us that within every atom, an incredibly powerful force called the strong nuclear force holds the nucleus together. Without this precise force, matter itself would disintegrate. Yet this force, like everything else, was created through Christ and points to his wisdom.
Consider this in your daily life: When you step into your workplace tomorrow, remember that every computer, every desk, every colleague was created through Christ. When you look at your children, recall that their unique personalities, talents, and dreams were crafted by him. This understanding transforms Monday mornings from mundane to meaningful.
Created For Him
Perhaps even more remarkable is Paul’s assertion that all things were created “for him.” The Greek preposition here (eis) points to Christ as creation’s goal or purpose. This truth speaks powerfully into our struggles with identity and purpose. That promotion you’re seeking? It exists for Christ. That difficult relationship you’re navigating? It exists for his purposes. Even our trials carry eternal significance because they exist for him.
Ask yourself: What current situation feels meaningless or frustrating? How might viewing it as existing “for Christ” change your approach?
Holding All Things Together
Just as gravitational forces keep planets in their perfect orbits, Christ actively sustains every aspect of creation. When facing health challenges, relationship difficulties, or career uncertainties, remember that the One who holds galaxies together holds your life as well. As Hebrews 1:3 affirms, He is “upholding the universe by the word of his power.”
Prayer Prompt: Jesus, help me trust your sustaining power in [name your current challenge].
