Chosen and Cherished
Evening Peace: A Quiet Time of Prayer and Reflection Before Sleep
Tonight’s Verses
We give thanks to God always for all of you, constantly mentioning you in our prayers, remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake. And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit.
1 Thessalonians 1:2-6
Reflection
In his opening words to the Thessalonians, Paul expresses profound gratitude for their faith, love, and hope in Christ. These qualities, rooted in their response to the gospel, are the fruits of God’s work in their lives. He reassures them of their identity as beloved and chosen by God, evidenced by the power of the Holy Spirit in their transformation. This truth is no less true for us today. Our faith and perseverance are not of our own making - they are the result of God’s grace at work within us. Even in trials, we are reminded of his faithful presence, enabling us to endure with joy.
The Thessalonians’ joy, despite affliction, reflects the deep satisfaction that comes from knowing they are in Christ. St. John Chrysostom once wrote, “Joy is the unfailing sign of the presence of God.” The Spirit’s work within us fills us with this joy, a testimony to the reality of our faith. As we reflect on Paul’s words, we’re invited to remember the ways God has been faithful in our own lives, how he’s strengthened us in difficulty, and how his Spirit has given us the conviction to stand firm in the truth of the gospel.
Tonight, rest in the knowledge that you are chosen by God and cherished in his love. Even in life’s afflictions, his Spirit sustains you, fills you with joy, and empowers you to walk in faith and love. Let this assurance quiet your heart and renew your hope as you prepare for rest.
Prayer
Gracious Father, thank you for your love and for choosing me to be yours. I praise you for the work of faith, labor of love, and steadfast hope you are cultivating in my life through your Spirit. When I face trials, help me to trust in your power and find joy in your presence. As I lie down to rest, fill my heart with the assurance of your love and the peace of knowing I’m held securely in your hands. May your Spirit renew and strengthen me for the days ahead. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
