Tonight’s Verse
Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations.
Romans 1:1-5
Reflection
As he opens his letter to the Romans, Paul reminds us of God’s eternal plan for salvation through Jesus Christ. The gospel is no afterthought but the fulfillment of God’s promises in Scripture. Jesus, both truly human and truly divine, was appointed in power through his resurrection, demonstrating that he is the risen Lord who reigns over all. This truth offers believers deep assurance: God’s plan is sovereign, his promises are trustworthy, and his grace is sufficient. In this, we can find rest, knowing that God’s purposes in Christ are unshakable and eternal.
Paul also points us to the grace we have received through Jesus. This grace isn’t merely a gift for our personal salvation but a call to live faithfully in obedience to Christ. As Augustine taught, “Grace is given not because we have done good works, but in order that we may be able to do them.” Through the gospel, we are empowered to reflect Christ in our lives and fulfill his purposes, trusting his Spirit to guide and strengthen us.
Tonight, let the gospel be your anchor. Whatever burdens or uncertainties you carry, remember that the God who raised Jesus from the dead holds you in his hand. His grace calls you, sustains you, and carries you forward in faith. Rest in his love and the certainty that his purposes are good and unfailing.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you for the gospel of grace that reveals your eternal plan through Jesus Christ. As I end this day, I ask you to quiet my heart and fill me with the assurance of your promises. Help me to rest in the power of Christ’s resurrection and trust in your sovereign purposes. Strengthen my faith and deepen my obedience to your will, so I may live for your glory. Watch over me tonight, and may your peace refresh my spirit. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
This Evening Peace devotional reminds us that God’s grace and calling give us both assurance and purpose. As you close your day, rest in the knowledge that God is at work in and through you, bringing his gospel to life for the sake of his name.
