Greetings, dear friends and fellow pilgrims,
Today, we’re embarking on a series that’s as essential as a well-brewed cup of sweet tea on a sweltering Georgia afternoon – the art of setting and living by God-centered priorities.
The Gentleman’s Dilemma: Juggling Hats and Hearts 🎩❤️
Now, my friends, if there’s one thing I’ve learned in my years of traipsing this earthly realm, it’s that life has a peculiar way of filling our plates faster than we can say “bless your heart.” As a writer, professor, Sunday school teacher, and family man, I often find myself wearing more hats than a milliner’s shop window. And let me tell you, balancing all these roles can be trickier than teaching a bulldog to waltz!
But here’s the rub – and I confess this with all the humility of a man who’s stubbed his toe on more than one of life’s hurdles – knowing what our priorities should be and actually living them out are two entirely different kettles of fish.
The Divine Playbook: Our Foundation 📖
Thankfully, we’re not left to our own devices in this grand balancing act. The Good Lord, in his infinite wisdom, has provided us with a playbook that would make even the most seasoned Georgia Bulldogs coach green with envy. Let’s take a gander at a few key plays:
1. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. (Matthew 6:33)
2. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. (Mark 12:30)
3. So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. (1 Corinthians 10:31)
Now, these verses are clearer than a bell on a crisp Sunday morning. They lay out our universal purpose with the precision of a master cartographer – to glorify God in all we do and to seek his kingdom above all else.
The Unique Calling: Finding Your Place in the Divine Orchestra 🎻
But here’s where it gets as interesting as a plot twist in a Flannery O'Connor novel – while we all share this universal purpose, each of us has a unique melody to play in God’s grand symphony. Just as no two Georgia pine trees are identical, no two Christian walks are exactly alike.
Some of us might be called to raise a family, others to serve in far-off lands. Some might be gifted with a silver tongue for preaching, others with hands skilled in healing. The key is to discern our individual calling and align our priorities accordingly.
When the “Is” and the “Ought” Collide 🤔
Now, my friends, I’d be remiss if I didn't admit to my own struggles in this arena. There have been times when my priorities have been as jumbled as a bag of boiled peanuts. I recall a period when my dedication to academic pursuits began to overshadow my family commitments. It took a gentle (but firm) reminder from my dear wife to help me realign my focus.
This experience taught me a valuable lesson – the importance of regular self-reflection and the humility to admit when our actual priorities don’t match up with what they ought to be.
Practical Steps for the Priority-Minded Pilgrim 👣
1. Daily Devotion: Start each day with a moment of quiet reflection and prayer. It’s amazing how a few minutes with the Good Book can set the tone for the entire day.
2. Regular Review: Set aside time each week to evaluate your priorities. Are they aligned with God’s will for your life?
3. Seek Wise Counsel: Don’t be too proud to ask for advice. Sometimes, an outside perspective can be as refreshing as a cool breeze on a sultry summer’s day.
4. Practice Saying “No”: Remember, every “yes” to one thing is a “no” to something else. Choose wisely, my friends.
A Parting Thought 💭
As we wrap up this first installment in our series on priorities, I’m reminded of a quote by that great Christian thinker, C.S. Lewis: “Put first things first and we get second things thrown in: put second things first and we lose both first and second things.”
Let’s strive to put first things first, shall we? It may not always be easy – in fact, it rarely is – but with God’s grace and a little perseverance, we can align our lives with his divine purpose.
Until next time, may your priorities be as well-ordered as a proper afternoon tea, and may your steps be guided by the One who orders all things well.
Yours in tweed and grace,
Augustus B. Merriweather III
P.S. Remember, like a good football playbook, life’s priorities need regular review and occasional audibles. Stay flexible, my friends!
